How to help someone during a BPD episode
If someone you know opens up to you about them having borderline personality disorder, they will experience episodes. BPD episodes is something that happens due to a trigger(trauma trigger, extreme stress, life changes). We cannot control an episode happening, but can learn how to cope with it with DBT.
What is borderline personality disorder?
It's a severe mental health condition that severely affects all aspects of your life. A person experiences severe abandonment issues whether real or perceived, very unstable rapidly changing emotions, difficulty keeping relationships, self harm behaviors, suicide attempts, chronic feelings of emptiness, intense outbursts of anger, dangerous and impulsive behaviors, dissociation, paranoia and short lasting hallucinations. It is considered a disability and it's hard to cope with life, work, school etc.
What is a bpd episode?
A borderline personality disorder episode has a few types - splitting episode(going from idolizing someone to devaluing them if they do something that's perceived as wrong), anger episode, depressive episode, dissociative episode, euphoric episode and others.
What TO do if someone if having a splitting/anger/depressive/dissociative bpd episode:
Keep by their side, bring them water/snacks, look up DBT skills to try help them regulate their emotions, if they let you give them a hug, give reassurance that you're not leaving them and that their feelings are valid. Keep a calm voice.
What NOT to do if someone is having a splitting/anger/depressive/dissociative bpd episode:
DON'T LEAVE THEM. Even if they're yelling and crying for you to fuck off and leave them, they're actually hurting and are testing you if you're actually going to leave them. They're hurt and need someone by their side. (UNLESS before an episode they actually set a boundry that they need a moment alone to calm down so it doesn't turn into a spiraling episode. If that's the case then respect their decision) Don't call them crazy/overly emotional or dramatic. Don't yell back at them.
Borderline pd makes a person act in impulsive ways. An episode can result in self harm and attempted suicide because emotions are so extreme it feels like the end of the world and are too painful to deal with. So try to keep them safe. If it seems like they're a danger to themselves take them to the emergency room.
